Our Community : History

Joseph's Coat was founded in 1989 in response to the need for no-cost clothing, personal and household items by the homeless in St. Paul's inner city.  Joseph's Coat was conceived as a place where volunteers would donate their time and resources to provide the needed items and would join with the poor to create a storefront community that extended welcome, acceptance and respect for all.

Originally housed on St. Peter Street in downtown St. Paul, Joseph's Coat has relocated several times as larger quarters to accommodate growing needs have become available.  In March of 2003, the organization moved to its current site at 1107 West 7th Street where it provides essential goods and services to approximately 750 individuals each week.
