Frequently Asked Questions

Who operates Joseph’s Coat?

Joseph’s Coat is an independent, nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization. Although we receive support from many philanthropic partners throughout the community, we are a self-sustaining organization.

Is there a charge for the things at Joseph’s Coat?

No. All items available in the store have been received as donations which we pass on at no charge to our guests.

If everything is free, why are you so particular about the quality of donations?

People who shop at Joseph’s Coat are already struggling with issues in their lives. Our purpose is to help them feel better about themselves – not remind them that they need help. Expecting our shoppers to wear apparel that tells everyone they can’t afford clothing doesn’t promote self-respect and dignity.

Do I need a referral to shop at Joseph’s Coat?

No. Anyone who presents a photo ID at our sign-in desk may shop once per week at Joseph’s Coat.

Does Joseph’s Coat provide food?

Joseph’s Coat is not a food shelf but will help its guests identify and locate food resources, if needed.

How do I value my goods donations for tax deduction purposes?

The donor is responsible for determining the value of their individual donation. IRS Publication 561 “Determining the Value of Donated Property” may provide some useful information.

Why are you closed one week per month?

Joseph’s Coat is an extremely busy place. Our day-to-day focus is serving our shoppers and donors, leaving little time to handle the operations and business side of our organization. We are a small non-profit and primarily rely on a volunteer staff to fulfill our mission. We are closed for shopping and donations so that we are able to concentrate on operational functions.

Why do you sometimes stop taking donations before 2 PM?

We are fortunate that the community is so generous with their donations of goods and we appreciate them. However, we have limited space in our building and must adhere to fire codes. When our donations reach a certain limit, we have to stop accepting more. If we close before 2 PM, it will be on our website.

The generosity of individuals and organizations

Joseph’s Coat receives no public funding, and relies on the generosity of individuals and organizations to meet its general operating and program expenses. Please help those we serve by making a donation!
